St. Robert Bellarmine

Bishop and Doctor of the Church

History:  Saint Robert was born at Monte Pulciano, Tuscany, in 1542. He entered the Society of Jesus at Rome and was ordained a priest. He engaged in important debates in defense of the Catholic faith and taught theology at the Roman College. After being made cardinal and named bishop of Capua, he worked in the Roman Congregations on numerous questions of the day. He died at Rome in 1621.  His feast is celebrated on September 17th.1

God our Father, you gave Robert Bellarmine wisdom and goodness to defend the faith of your Church. By his prayers may we always rejoice in the profession of our faith. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
